Assemblymember Reyes' Statement on Deputy District Attorney Michael Selyem

For immediate release:

San Bernardino The following is a statement made by Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes in connection with the statements made by Michael Selyem, Deputy District Attorney, San Bernardino County.

“Last week I became aware of the statements made by Deputy District Attorney Michael Selyem against U.S Representative Maxine Waters, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Mexican immigrants and the victim of a police shooting.

It is unbelievable to witness the bigotry and lack of moral compass from an individual who has been sworn to serve and protect the public. There is no scenario where this individual’s thoughts and words will allow him to maintain an impartial stand for the public he serves.

Michael Selyem’s attack on people of color is reprehensible. His words are rooted in hate and cannot be undone; he needs to be held accountable for his words. We applaud the news today from the San Bernardino County District Attorney, Michael Ramos, that Mr. Selyem has been placed on Administrative Leave.

This event continues to remind us of the deeply rooted structural violence people of color in our communities have to deal with. We must continue to fight for a more equitable, just society for us all. “

Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes represents Assembly District 47 which includes the cities of Fontana, Rialto, Colton, Grand Terrace, San Bernardino and the unincorporated areas of Muscoy and Bloomington.
