(San Bernardino, California)- Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes released the following statement:
“After spending $200,000 of our taxpayers’ money, the Board of Supervisors now knows that what the Legislature told them, was the truth. And our advice was free.
Two years ago I joined Former Senator Connie Leyva and Assemblymember Freddie Rodríguez in telling San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors that we were shocked by their reasoning behind Measure EE. A local developer told the supervisors that the Inland Empire was being shortchanged by Sacramento. This developer told them that the region was not getting its fair share of resources and the answer was to split off from California and either join Nevada or Arizona.
Our letter stated: "We are shocked with the reasoning behind this initiative, concerned about the cost to taxpayers to essentially ask local officials to do their jobs, and disappointed in the narrative being created regarding our community. As collective members of the state legislature, we have worked hard to ensure that we bring resources to the County of San Bernardino, cities within the county, and nonprofit organizations supporting the community.”
After using tax payer dollars to put this disingenuous measure on the ballot, and an almost $200,000 consultant payment later, we know what we knew already. We know that over the past three years the county has received 9% more state funding per person than other counties and that succession would hurt San Bernardino County residents.
There is no question that we must do better. We can bring more resources, especially to address our homeless crisis, and improve the quality of life for residents across our communities but we need to do so in a collaborative way.
I look forward to the coordination to bring real positive change to the IE.”
