Veteran Care and Housing Oversight Takes Center Stage as Bill Passes Assembly Committee on Veterans Affairs

For immediate release:

Sacramento – Today, the Assembly Committee on Veterans Affairs passed AB 1365 (Reyes) with unanimous bi-partisan support by a vote of 10-0. The bill would require CalVet, which oversees the states eight veterans homes to make public its financial reports and to implement a review on the homes every five years to determine if these assets are adequately serving the California’s 1.7 million veterans efficiently.

“Our veterans have given so much to our country, it’s only right that we do everything we can to make their care a priority,” said Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes. “AB 1365 will ensure that our state’s CalVet homes run efficiently and serve as many veterans as they can while remaining fiscally responsible.”

During a 16-month review, the Little Hoover Commission found that the state’s 2,610 bed CalVet program had unnecessarily high costs and served less than 1% of the veterans in the state. The commission made a total of eight recommendations on fiscal transparency and operational efficiency in their March report. Read the full report here.

AB 1365 will be heard next and voted on in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. For more information on the bill, click here.
