Sacramento – Yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 1365 (Reyes) into law at the State Capitol. The bill by Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes, would implement a program to ensure fiscal transparency at the state’s eight veterans homes which provide managed and long-term care to thousands of veterans in the state. The bill also requires CalVet to prepare an annual financial report on the homes and provide a copy of the report to the legislature as well as make available the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) website.
During a 16-month review, the Little Hoover Commission found that the state’s 2,610 bed CalVet program had unnecessarily high costs and served less than 1% of the veterans in the state. The commission made a total of eight recommendations on fiscal transparency and operational efficiency in their March report. Read the full report here.
“Our veterans have given so much to our country, it’s only right that we do everything we can to ensure that they receive the care that they were promised,” said Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes. “AB 1365 will ensure that our state’s CalVet homes run efficiently and serve as many veterans as they can while remaining fiscally responsible.”
