Sacramento – Earlier this week, AB 991 by Assemblymember Eloise Reyes (D-San Bernardino) passed out of the Senate Human Services Committee on a vote of 6-0. AB 991 would require every county department of social services to publish information about services offered to our foster youth in the Independent Living Programs (ILP) on their website.
ILP’s are operated by the county in which our foster youth reside and each program varies in the services provided in order to be flexible and meet the demands and needs of the local foster youth population. These ILP’s provide training, services and programs aimed at self-sufficiency and were prompted by the recognition that many foster youth were unable to successfully transition from foster care to group care to adulthood.
“Independent Living Programs offer a variety of services that help our foster youth take responsibility and control over their own lives by achieving self-sufficiency,” said Assemblymember Reyes. “There is no current requirement that county social service departments post this information or make it accessible. AB 991 would ensure that our foster youth stay updated on the services that are offered and allows them to access those services.”
