Sacramento – Today, Governor Newsom centered his State of the State address on how California must get serious with real solutions and actionable policies to address homelessness. Given the size and scope of this problem, we must look at every tool and option that government has available to mitigate what has effectively become a failure of state and local policy.
It was encouraging to hear Governor Newsom mention the importance of reaching at-risk and foster youth, who make up over 10% of the homeless population. If we do not specifically address youth experiencing homelessness this issue could spiral into generational homelessness and poverty. Investing in this population now means stopping chronic homelessness in the future. We have to prioritize our children, youth, and families in our investments and policies if we hope to build a California which truly serves all its constituents; and I look forward to working with Governor Newsom to do exactly that.
