(Sacramento) – Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes (D-San Bernardino) and the State Assembly passed ACR 56, a measure declaring April 2017 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and April 26, 2017 as Denim Day California. Denim Day is a response to the 1998 Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn the conviction of a man who sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman after the court determined that, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” Assemblymember Reyes told the Assembly, “Members there is no excuse and never an invitation to rape. The decision by the Italian Supreme Court demonstrates that when people in positions of power, privilege and authority lack information about rape the result can be a failure to hold perpetrators accountable.” Here’s more in this Assembly Access video.
